Caravan and Campervan Finance Claims — What Are Your Options?

Scheme status (updated 5 August 2026): parts of the FCA motor finance redress scheme are temporarily suspended while the Upper Tribunal considers legal challenges. Lenders do not currently have to calculate or pay compensation under the scheme, the original decision and payment dates no longer apply, and no payment under the scheme is guaranteed. If the scheme proceeds, first payments are expected in 2027 at the earliest. Any dates mentioned below were set before the suspension.

Campervans and motorhomes — which have a motor — ARE covered by the FCA’s motor finance redress scheme. Caravans — which are towed and have no motor — are NOT covered by the formal FCA scheme. But that is not the end of the story for caravan owners. This guide explains both situations clearly.

The Key Distinction: Motor vs No Motor

The FCA’s motor finance redress scheme covers motor vehicles — vehicles with a motor, designed to be driven on public roads. This is the legal basis for its scope, confirmed in the PS26/3 policy statement published 30 March 2026.

The relevant categories are:

  • COVERED: Campervans with a motor (self-propelled motorhomes) — e.g. VW Campervan, Mercedes Sprinter-based camper, Fiat Ducato-based motorhome
  • COVERED: Cars, motorbikes, vans — see our motorbike finance claims guide
  • NOT COVERED: Static or touring caravans — they are towed vehicles with no motor
  • NOT COVERED: Trailer tents, horse trailers, boat trailers

Martin Lewis was direct about this in his summary of the scheme: “Not caravan because it doesn’t have a motor. It’s specifically PCP or HP finance, not lease.” If you are a caravan owner, read on — you may still have options outside the formal scheme.

Campervans and Motorhomes — Fully Covered

If you financed a campervan or motorhome on PCP or HP between 6 April 2007 and 1 November 2024, your agreement is within the FCA redress scheme scope in the same way as any car.

Common campervans and motorhomes financed through dealer networks include:

  • VW California and Transporter-based conversions
  • Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based motorhomes
  • Fiat Ducato-based motorhomes — one of the most popular bases for UK motorhome manufacturers
  • Ford Transit-based campervans
  • Hymer, Bailey, Autotrail, Elddis, Coachman and other motorhome brands financed through dealer networks

Caravans — Outside the Formal Scheme, But Not Without Options

Touring and static caravans are excluded from the FCA redress scheme because they have no motor. The scheme is specifically designed for motor vehicle finance.

However, this does not mean caravan HP agreements are entirely without recourse. If your caravan Hire Purchase agreement included a Discretionary Commission Arrangement — where the dealer inflated your interest rate to earn more commission without telling you — this is the same unfair practice that affects motor finance. You can complain directly to your lender outside the formal FCA scheme.

The practical difference is that caravan complaints will not be processed through the FCA’s standardised scheme methodology. Instead, they would be assessed individually by the lender and, if rejected, by the Financial Ombudsman Service. The FOS has jurisdiction over caravan finance complaints and has upheld DCA complaints in the past.

Caravan complaints outside the formal scheme are more complex and the outcome is less certain than for motor vehicles within the scheme. If you want to explore this, Claims Bible can advise on the right approach for your specific agreement.

How to Check If Your Campervan or Motorhome Finance Was Mis-Sold

  • Confirm the agreement was PCP or HP (not leasing or contract hire)
  • Confirm it was arranged through a dealer or broker between April 2007 and November 2024
  • Complain to your lender — they must confirm whether a DCA or high commission was present on your agreement
  • Use Claims Bible’s free agreement finder to trace campervan and motorhome HP agreements going back to 2007. See: Claiming Without Paperwork

Frequently Asked Questions

I financed a Fiat Ducato-based motorhome through a motorhome dealer. Is it covered?

Yes. A Fiat Ducato-based motorhome is a motor vehicle and your PCP or HP agreement arranged through the motorhome dealer is within the FCA redress scheme, provided the agreement dates fall within the eligible period and meets the other standard criteria.

My caravan HP agreement had a very high interest rate. Can I complain?

Yes — directly to the lender, outside the formal FCA scheme. If the dealer had a DCA and inflated your rate without telling you, this is the same underlying unfair practice. Complain to your lender directly, then escalate to the FOS if they reject it. The FOS has jurisdiction over caravan finance complaints.

Is a campervan conversion on a van covered?

Yes, provided the underlying vehicle is a van with a motor. The campervan conversion is part of the vehicle — the question is whether the PCP or HP agreement was for the vehicle (not a lease), arranged through a dealer, between the eligible dates.

I had a motorhome on HP with no paperwork. Can I still claim?

Yes. Claims Bible can trace motorhome HP agreements using your personal details and the approximate dates of the agreement. You do not need the original paperwork to start a claim.

Think You May Have a Motor Finance Claim?

The FCA estimates average compensation of around £830 per eligible agreement, but eligibility and payment amounts vary. Some customers may receive nothing. Complaints about agreements started from 1 April 2014 should be submitted by 30 June 2026 to be considered under the earlier timetable. Different dates apply to older agreements. The scheme is currently subject to legal challenge, so dates and payment timings may change.
