Can I Claim UK Car Finance Compensation From Abroad?

Scheme status (updated 5 August 2026): parts of the FCA motor finance redress scheme are temporarily suspended while the Upper Tribunal considers legal challenges. Lenders do not currently have to calculate or pay compensation under the scheme, the original decision and payment dates no longer apply, and no payment under the scheme is guaranteed. If the scheme proceeds, first payments are expected in 2027 at the earliest. Any dates mentioned below were set before the suspension.

If you had UK car finance between April 2007 and November 2024 and have since emigrated or moved abroad, you can still claim under the FCA motor finance redress scheme (PS26/3). Eligibility is based on the UK finance agreement — not your current country of residence. This guide explains how to claim from outside the UK.

Residency Does Not Affect Eligibility

The FCA scheme covers agreements arranged in the UK in the eligible period. Whether you now live in Australia, Canada, Spain, the UAE or anywhere else, your right to claim is identical to someone still living in the UK. Subsequent emigration, change of citizenship or permanent residency abroad does not change the fact that your agreement was a UK consumer credit agreement subject to UK law and FCA regulation.

How to Submit a Complaint From Abroad

All major lenders accept complaints by email. You do not need to be in the UK. The process is identical to a UK-based complainant:

Identify your lender — named on your original finance agreement. If you do not have it, email the lender requesting all data they hold on you via a Subject Access Request. They must respond within one calendar month.

Submit your complaint by email referencing PS26/3. Include your full name, date of birth, your UK address at the time of the agreement, vehicle registration if known, and a statement that you are complaining about undisclosed commission arrangements.

All subsequent correspondence can be handled by email. You do not need a UK address.

Payment to a Non-UK Bank Account

Most lenders can make international bank transfers. When contacted with a compensation offer, provide your IBAN and SWIFT/BIC codes. Be aware of any international transfer fees or currency conversion costs. If you maintain a UK bank account, payment to that is simpler.

Using a CMC From Abroad

You can use a UK CMC such as Claims Bible to manage your claim entirely remotely. You sign documents digitally and correspond by email. No in-person meetings are required. This is particularly useful if you are in a time zone where dealing with UK lenders is inconvenient.

Scheme Timetable (Original Dates, Now Suspended)

Post-April 2014 agreements: Complain before 30 June 2026 → paid by November 2026

Pre-April 2014 agreements: Complain before 31 August 2026 → paid by January 2027

Final deadline: 31 August 2027

Finding Your Old UK Agreement From Abroad

Submit a Subject Access Request by email to any lender you think you used. UK credit reports can often be accessed online from abroad through Experian, Equifax or TransUnion. Search archived emails for car finance terms, dealer names or lender correspondence. Check old UK bank statements if accessible via online banking.

How Far Back Can You Claim?

Frequently Asked Questions

I live in Australia. Can I use a UK CMC to handle my claim?

Yes. Claims Bible handles claims entirely remotely by email and digital signature. Time zone differences do not affect your ability to participate in the scheme.

My lender only has my old UK address. Will they contact me?

This is exactly why proactive complaint submission is better than waiting. If you submit the complaint yourself you control the correspondence details and ensure the lender has your current email address. Waiting for the lender to contact you risks them being unable to reach you.

My agreement was paid off before I emigrated. Am I still eligible?

Yes. Completing or settling a finance agreement before emigrating has no effect on eligibility. The claim relates to the commission arrangement at the start of the agreement — your subsequent location and the agreement status are irrelevant.

Think You May Have a Motor Finance Claim?

The FCA estimates average compensation of around £830 per eligible agreement, but eligibility and payment amounts vary. Some customers may receive nothing. Complaints about agreements started from 1 April 2014 should be submitted by 30 June 2026 to be considered under the earlier timetable. Different dates apply to older agreements. The scheme is currently subject to legal challenge, so dates and payment timings may change.
