About Virgin Money Personal Loans
Virgin Money personal lending is provided by Clydesdale Bank plc, trading as Virgin Money, authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the FCA and PRA under FRN 121873. The group has been through two big changes: Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank rebranded their lending under the Virgin Money name after acquiring the brand in 2018, and Virgin Money has been part of Nationwide since 2024.
None of that changes your rights. A complaint about a Virgin Money loan — or an older loan under the Clydesdale or Yorkshire Bank names — goes to the same regulated entity, which remains responsible for its historic lending decisions and is well capitalised to pay full redress on successful complaints.
Was Your Virgin Money Loan Unaffordable?
Under CONC 5.2A of the FCA Handbook, the lender must carry out a reasonable and proportionate creditworthiness assessment before lending — checking whether you could repay sustainably, without borrowing elsewhere or going without essentials. Your loan may have been unaffordable if, at the time it was granted:
- Your income, expenditure or existing commitments weren't properly verified
- You were already showing difficulty — persistent overdraft use, minimum-only card payments, other high-cost credit
- The repayments only worked on paper by ignoring your real living costs
- The loan consolidated other debts but left the underlying shortfall in place
- A further loan or top-up was granted while you were struggling with the first
Common Patterns in Virgin Money Loan Complaints
- Lending into visible difficulty — a credit file at application already showing arrears, defaults or heavy reliance on other credit.
- Consolidation that didn't consolidate — old credit lines left open and re-used alongside the new repayment.
- Serial lending — a top-up or second loan granted while the first was clearly a strain; each advance needed its own affordability assessment.
- Cross-product visibility — where the borrower also held a Virgin Money credit card at or near its limit while the loan was approved. The card has its own claim route.

Time Limits
Six years from the lending decision, or three years from when you knew (or ought reasonably to have known) you had cause to complain — whichever is longer. Loans from the Clydesdale and Yorkshire Bank era can still be in time under the three-year rule. See how far back can I claim.
Frequently Asked Questions
My paperwork says Clydesdale Bank, not Virgin Money. Is that a problem?
No — it's the same company. Clydesdale Bank plc is the legal entity behind Virgin Money's banking products, and older loans were often documented under the Clydesdale or Yorkshire Bank names. The complaint goes to the same place either way.
Virgin Money is now owned by Nationwide. Does that affect my claim?
No. The acquisition changed who owns the group, not who is responsible for its lending. Clydesdale Bank plc remains the regulated entity that answers for the loan, and a Nationwide-brand loan is a separate product from a separate entity.
What could I get back?
A successful complaint typically refunds the interest and charges on the unaffordable lending, adds Ombudsman interest, and removes related negative markers from your credit file. If you still owe, the refund reduces the balance first.
