Stabbing & Knife Crime Compensation Claims — UK Guide (CICA)

Being stabbed or cut with a knife is often one of the most serious forms of violent crime, and injuries can range from deep lacerations to life-threatening damage to the chest or abdomen. If you have been injured in a knife attack, you may be entitled to compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), a state scheme funded by the government rather than your attacker.

Knife crime has been a significant policy focus in recent years — the government reported knife homicides falling by around 20% and knife crime overall down for the first time in four years in its October 2025 knife crime update — but for anyone injured, the immediate priority is recovery and, where appropriate, compensation. This guide explains what counts as a stabbing compensation claim, what it typically covers, and how to start a claim on a no win no fee basis. For the general CICA rules that apply to all violent crime claims, see our assault compensation claims guide.

What Counts as a Stabbing Compensation Claim?

A stabbing compensation claim covers any injury caused by being cut, stabbed, or slashed with a knife or other bladed weapon in a crime of violence, whether or not the attacker was caught or convicted. Injuries commonly seen in these claims include:

  • Penetrating chest injuries, sometimes requiring surgery to open the chest (a thoracotomy) and repair damaged organs
  • Penetrating abdominal injuries, sometimes requiring a laparotomy to repair one or more internal organs
  • Collapsed lung or other internal injuries from a deep chest wound
  • Nerve, tendon, or muscle damage, particularly to the hands and arms from defensive wounds
  • Permanent scarring, which is often a significant factor in valuing a claim
  • Psychological injury, including PTSD following a violent and often sudden attack

In the most serious cases, a stabbing is fatal. If you have lost a family member to a knife attack, see our separate CICA fatal injury guide, which explains bereavement, dependency, and funeral payments.

Why Stabbing Claims Are Usually a CICA Matter

As with most violent crime, a civil claim directly against the person who attacked you is rarely worth pursuing, since most individual attackers have no money or assets to satisfy a judgment. CICA exists precisely to compensate victims regardless of whether their attacker can be identified, prosecuted, or made to pay. See our CICA Eligibility & Tariff Guide for the full eligibility rules.

What Compensation Could You Receive?

CICA uses a fixed tariff of injuries rather than assessing every case from scratch. Payments relevant to stabbing injuries include fixed amounts for chest injuries requiring a thoracotomy, abdominal injuries requiring a laparotomy and organ repair, and separate tariffs for scarring and psychological injury, which can be combined using CICA’s multiple injury rules. For the specific bands, see our CICA tariff bands & compensation amounts page, or use our CICA compensation calculator for an estimate. Full details of every tariff band are set out in the official criminal injuries compensation scheme injury payments document.

On top of the injury payment, you may also be able to claim for loss of earnings and expenses such as care, counselling, or rehabilitation costs, if you were unable to work, or had very limited ability to work, for 28 weeks or longer.

Who Can Claim?

  • The direct victim of the stabbing
  • Someone injured while stepping in to help a victim or stop an attack, provided the risk taken was justified and exceptional
  • Close relatives and dependants, in fatal cases — see our CICA fatal injury guide above

Time Limits

You generally have two years from the date of the attack to apply. See our CICA two-year time limit guide for the exceptions that can extend this.

Evidence That Strengthens a Stabbing Compensation Claim

  • The police crime reference number and details of the investigation
  • Medical and surgical records from A&E and any hospital admission
  • Photographs of injuries and scarring, taken as the wounds heal
  • Witness statements and any CCTV footage
  • A record of how the attack has affected your work, sleep, and daily life

See our evidence needed guide for more on building a strong claim.

Common Questions About Stabbing Compensation Claims

The person who stabbed me hasn’t been caught. Can I still claim?

Yes. CICA does not require a conviction, or even an identified attacker, provided the incident was reported to the police and the evidence supports a genuine crime of violence.

Will my compensation be affected if I was also carrying a weapon or involved in the altercation?

It can be. CICA considers your own conduct and character when deciding whether to make an award, separately from any unspent convictions you may have. See our how a criminal record affects a CICA claim guide for more on how this is assessed.

I was stabbed while trying to stop an attack on someone else. Can I claim?

Yes. CICA recognises claims from people injured while taking a justified and exceptional risk to protect someone else or stop a crime, even if you were not the original target.

How much compensation could I get for a stabbing?

It depends on the severity of the injury, whether surgery was needed, any permanent scarring, and the psychological impact. For specific figures, see our CICA tariff bands & compensation amounts page or use the CICA compensation calculator for an estimate.

How long does a stabbing compensation claim take?

Straightforward claims can be decided within 12 months, though cases involving ongoing medical treatment, a live police investigation, or a criminal trial often take considerably longer, since CICA may wait for these to conclude before making a final decision. See our how long does a claim take guide for general timelines.
