Who are Wonga?

Wonga was a household name and the largest payday lender in the UK, winning awards from The Guardian and The Times and sponsoring premiership football club Newcastle United for £8 million a year. They even sponsored free travel on the London Underground on New Year’s Eve in 2010. Following a 2.6m fine in 2014 for sending fake solicitors letters and the introduction of tougher financial legislation the following year which capped interest rates at 0.8% per day, Wonga was hit by a wave of compensation claims for unaffordable lending which ultimately led to its demise in 2018.

What’s the current situation?

The deadline was 30 September 2019 to submit a claim. Around 360,000 customers were paid out, but according to Administrators Grant Thornton “the total value of all accepted claims significantly exceeded the money available to be shared out” which meant just 4.3% of compensation was actually paid. On a £1,000 claim the claimant received just £43.

What is the deadline?
